![]() Our lab combines advances in basic affective science with clinical science. We develop and use indirect assessment methods to investigate cognitive, psychophysiological, behavioral, and motivational aspects of emotions and affective psychopathology. One current research study examines emotion regulation and mental health problems in individuals with alexithymia – reduced ability to identify and describe one's own emotions. Another project employs the appraisal theories of emotions to explore the cognitive patterns uniquely linked to anxiety and depression.
Our research also focuses on comorbidities among mental health problems, particularly depression and anxiety disorders, and mechanisms of change in evidence-based psychotherapies. The ultimate research goals are to inform conceptualization of psychiatric disorders and to improve psychological interventions. Graduate students interested in applying to the Psy.D.
